Mercedes Niess is the Executive Director of the Marine Museum and is responsible for the many and varied facets of day-to-day operation of the Museum. Originally from Long Island, she holds a B.S. NYS Regent's degree from SUNY/Oswego in management with a museum studies minor, and serves in several community organizations: the Oswego Public Library, the Oswego County Tourism Advisory Council and the Salvation Army, among others. When she is not working tirelessly to oversee, develop and implement plans for the Marine Museum's daily operation and future growth, Mercedes has been instrumental in working with other not for profit directors to create a Leave a Legacy organization for Oswego County. She also works closely with other historical agencies to better communicate to the community the importance of supporting the preservation of history in our area.

Mercedes loves being on the waterfront no matter what time of year it is.

Sheila Weldin, who started working at the Museum as a volunteer, is  Assistant to the Director.

Sheila holds a BA in communications and social sciences from Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio with an academic term abroad through Cambridge University in England. She pursued two internships in public relations, one with the Netherhall Community Education Centre in Cambridge, England and the other with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Lake County in Painesville, Ohio.

A native of Oswego County, she has lived in the Oswego area except for her college years and a summer as a high school exchange student in Norway.

Previous work experiences has made Sheila very familiar with the not-for-profit world.

Sheila is a member of West Baptist Church; her hobbies include all things natural - gardening, bird-watching, nature photography, etc. She also enjoys arts & crafts....too many interests, not enough time!

*Hello everyone!  The website has been turned over to me - I have left a lot of Don Laird's work in place (such as the nice bio he wrote for me, above).  I am so grateful for the strong "bones" he put in place and the wonderful creativity he loaded into this site.  Hopefully what I contribute is half as wonderful.

A volunteer since the early 1980's, Susan Wild is now staff.

She has been our Gift Shop Coordinator  since 1999 and has proved invaluable in the office, on the phones, with special projects and with our visitors.  She is a joy, always with a smile and pleasant words for everyone.  Her enthusiasm and broad-ranging adeptness make tasks speed by.  She brings with her a business background, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

Susan is an Oswego native, living on the East side with her husband, daughters and pets.  She is active in her church and community and is always on the go.

Gloria Spink is with the Museum, this year, through the Experience Works program, a national, charitable, community-based organization (originally named Green Thumb) which provides training, employment, and community service opportunities. Her time with the Museum is focused on clerical duties and working with the visitors; she particularly enjoys her time in the gift shop and on the computers. "It has been a learning experience and growing process," she says, and she "likes to help people and doing helpful things."

She graduated from Computerized Business Career School in Fulton and is an Oswego Native.

On the personal side, she likes "crafts, sewing and outdoor things, such as camping, though we haven't done a lot lately. I like helping order things for church and am an active Servant Evangelist. I love people and enjoy meeting new ones."
