Roland E. Stevens III

Artist & Architect

A native of Rochester, Mr. Stevens resides in Pultneyville, NY. He has a Master of Architecture from Syracuse University. After graduation he studied painting with Jossie Bilan. After a 30-year career as a county planner and architect, Roland is avidly pursuing his art as a plein-air painter in watercolor. He has been accepted into numerous juried exhibitions, and is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, Whiskey Painters of America, Central New York Watercolor Society, and the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society.

Artist’s Statement: As an architect, having been trained to explore the multiple possibilities of every design, I find it equally exciting and rewarding to apply that training to watercolor painting. I search for natural subject matter that presents an interesting challenge, frequently changing the focal point of interest by how I apply color. I usually sketch directly and apply some under-glazes to set up a theme and depending on how quickly it dries, will proceed, allowing numerous options to remain open for shifting the focal point. The challenge and excitement is in not recording all the facts but in trying to capture a likeness while experiencing a unique and unpredictable outcome.

The Flagship Niagara

"The Official Flagship of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania"

Visitors may tour it on the end of the West First Street Pier, outside the H. Lee White Marine Museum & next to the LT-5 tug!

Flagship Niagara is recognized in the United States and abroad as the premier sail training ship and as the most authentic early 19th century replica naval vessel. Since she first set sail in 1990, this reconstruction of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s victorious 1813 warship and flagship has served as a setting for education–and adventure. Through a blend of modern wisdom and carefully preserved tradition, Flagship Niagara has touched thousands of adventurous people of all ages with original and illuminating life experiences.

the ‘Pinta” and the ‘Nina’

The Nina & Pinta are seen, docked with the Historic National Landmark tug, LT-5, alongside the Marine Museum on Oswego's West First Street Pier.

Thursday, June 18, 2009 - Sunday, June 21, 2009 from 9:00am-6:00pm

See http://www.thenina.com/ for more information on the ships.

On Friday June 19th, the ‘Pinta” and the ‘Nina’ , replicas of Columbus’ ships will open in Oswego. The ships will be docked at the West First Street Pier, adjacent to the Marine Museum, until their departure early Monday morning June 22nd.
The ‘Nina’ was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools, and was called by Archaeology magazine “ the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.” The craftsmanship of construction and the details in the rigging make it a truly fascinating visit back to the Age of Discovery. The ‘Nina’ was used in the production of the film ‘1492’ starring Gerard Depardieu and directed by Ridley Scott.
The ‘Pinta’ was recently built in Brazil to accompany the ‘Nina’ on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel and offers larger deck space for walk-aboard tours and has a 900 sq. ft. main salon down below to view slide shows of the ships’ construction. The Pinta is available for private parties while in port.
Both ships will be touring together as a new and enhanced ‘sailing museum’ for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the ‘Caravel’, a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world.
While in port, the general public are invited to visit the ships for walk-aboard self-guided tours. The prices are $7.00 for adults, $6.00 for seniors and $5.00 for children. Children 4 and under are Free. The ship is open every day from 9am – 6pm. No reservations necessary. Teachers or groups wishing to schedule a 30 minute guided tour with a crew member should call the ship directly at 1-787-672-2152. Minimum of 15. $3/person .

MEET THE COMPOSER; BE A COMPOSER!

with Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR)

Saturday, February 28 • 10-11:30 AM

This program was a HUGE success, with a room full of children at rapt attention for over an hour and a half.

DBR got to know the kids, had them doing interactive exercises, playing their instruments in new ways and learning to compose their own music.  He had them think of the exhibits around them in new ways - musical ways... how would the canoe sound as music; how would that painting sound; how would the pulleys overhead sound?  He "played" their names with them...

He recently performed on the TV show "American Idol" with featured artist Lady Gaga, who has the #1 pop hit "Poker Face." (Get the performance or view a video of it on DBR's site.)

He also performed, in March at SUNY Oswego, as part of the Hudson River Quadricentenial Concert.

(Many of the participants then went through the exhibits in order to enter our annual student          art and writing contests.)

To learn more about DBR, click on his name, above.
