If you missed some news about 2005 programs and developments at the

H. Lee White Marine Museum, here's the place to check it out.

The culmination of the 2005 volunteer Appreciation Reception is always the presentation of the

Volunteer of the year award.

This year, the honor goes to long-time volunteer Brian Dice.  Brian started with us back in 1995 and has accumulated well over 300 hours of volunteer time between January 1 & October 31 this year.  (see listings, below)

Easy going, personable and diversely gifted, Brian is willing to do almost anything for the Museum!  From tarring the outdoor exhibit area and working with his dad to paint parking lot lines and accents, to giving tours on the tug, to building maintenance, to helping with mailings and other administrative jobs, the list is endless.

Brian is also a skilled recruiter, having brought to the volunteer roster, not only his old scout troop, but his parents and some of his friends and acquaintances.

Congratulations Brian and thank you for all you do!

Jane Abraham, riding with Fanny Knapp, in Fanny's antique car, represented the Museum in the 2005 Oswego Independence Day Parade.

Above, some of the people who came to volunteer training in May 2005.  Won't you join us at the next session?

Also on the Marine Museum staff is Sarah Wise...Sarah is an Oswego native who has held a wide variety of jobs, from berry-picking and food service to retail sales and factory work making parts for the Navy.

Sarah enjoys close ties with her three sons and the occasional game of Bingo. Sarah has worked for the Museum for some time now and we're glad to have her with us.

During the 2005 Annual Museum Picnic, William Cahill Jr. officially signed the documentation, transferring ownership of the historic fishing vessel "Eleanor D" to the Museum.

Check the "Eleanor D" page for information about this wonderful addition to the collection.

Right: Ann Cahill holds a photographic collage which was presented to her & her husband, commemorating their generous 2004 donation of the historic fishing vessel "Eleanor D".

We’re heading west again this year and invite you to come along on a great fall trip to Buffalo’s Shea’s Performing Arts Center to experience Lerner & Loewe’s smash hit

,

performed on the big stage by a national touring company.  If you’ve seen it before, here’s your chance to enjoy it again – a real Broadway production with all the trimmings and you won’t have to go to New York City to see it.  If this is your first time, you’re in for a spectacular treat – wonderful songs and beautiful costumes in a musical version of George Bernard Shaw’s original story, PYGMALION – what’s not to like!

Our day will begin with an afternoon visit to the

with its eclectic array of exhibits, including the Giant Ant Colony; Snakes, Turtles and Frogs; Gems and Minerals; Dinosaurs; and an amazing exploration of our place in space at the Museum’s new astronomy hall.

Of special note is WHEM-ANKH, The Cycle of Life in Ancient Egypt.  This fascinating exhibit traces the life of NES-HOR, a priest in the temple of MIN on the east bank of the Nile River during the second century BC.  Come and experience the world of ancient Egypt through the lives of NES-HOR and his family.

There will also be time to visit the Museum’s gift shop before boarding our bus to head for SALVATORE’S, where a delicious dinner awaits us.  This excellent restaurant, noted for its fine food and superb service, was enjoyed by our travel group last year.

Following dinner, we will leave for the Performing Arts Center in time for the 7:30 show and then it’s home again, arriving at West 1st Street pier at approximately 1:00am.  (Don’t worry - you’ll have lots of time to sleep on the bus, dreaming of our fun-filled day in western NY.)

Pictured are:  John Didier- Director of Terminals, Greg Cooper- Terminal Manager, John McClellan- CEO, Burt Russell- VP of Operations, Mark Taylor- Terminal Operator and Ray DuBois- Terminal Operator.

Recently, the staff and terminal manager of Sprague Energy’s Oswego Terminal, one of our neighbors in the Historic Maritime District, presented us a check for $1000.  Sprague employees cited the Marine Museum’s year ‘round programming efforts as the reason for their selection.

Representatives of Sprague Energy headquarters, in Portsmouth, NH, recently visited Oswego to present the Sprague 2004 “Terminal of the Year” award to their Oswego company site, located at the foot of West First Street.  Sprague Energy has been located in Oswego since 1989, and receives petroleum products from Canada.  The oil is transported by truck to NYS customers throughout the year.  The award is presented to the terminal that excels in safety, training, regulatory compliance, cost control, customer satisfaction and administrative excellence.  Oswego received the highest customer satisfaction approval rating on the Driver Survey this past year!  Congratulations!

Pictured are:  Greg Cooper- Terminal Manager, Jennifer Allen- General Operator, Ray DuBois- Terminal Operator and Mark Taylor- Terminal Operator.

Thank you to P&C Supermarket and RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) for donating the proceeds from their May "Coffee Fund" to the H. Lee White Marine Museum.  Every month, RSVP volunteers staff a wonderful coffee bar at the Oswego P&C, the proceeds from which go to local charities and non-profits.

Mercedes Niess, Associate Director of the Museum, is seen here accepting a check from P&C staff and RSVP volunteers.

Participation is limited, so please register early, by contacting the museum at 342-0480 or info@hleewhitemarinemuseum.com
